Galvani is an impact crater on the extreme western edge of the front of the moon , is therefore invisible due to the libration and, if visible from the earth, it is strongly distorted. It lies west of the Oceanus Procellarum , south of Volta and southwest of Repsold . It covers the northern edge of the very badly eroded whale plain of Gerard Q Outer . The crater rim is relatively heavily eroded. The northern part partially covers Langley crater .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1961 after the Italian biophysicist Luigi Galvani .
