Dry river |
The Gamchab is a dry river ( rivier ) in southern Namibia . It rises in the Karas Mountains , about 30 kilometers north of Grünau and flows at the edge of the Fish River Canyon National Park into the Orange River , which also forms the border with the Republic of South Africa .
The Gamchab very rarely has water above ground, but it does ensure a reliable underground groundwater flow. This is noticeable on the surface as a green band that runs through the desert. Here you will find a few acacias and many desert flowers, the seeds of which are washed here by the rare downpours from the Karas Mountains.
