Gamelion

Gamelion ( ancient Greek Γαμηλιών ) was a month in the Attic calendar .

It was the seventh month of the year after Poseideon and before Anthesterion ; in the Julian calendar it roughly corresponds to the month of January . The name is traced back to a festival of sacrifice held in this month for the goddess of marriage Hera Gamelia , although neither the epithet Gamelia nor a festival of this name, after which this month should be named, is attested.

For the Apaturia festival celebrated in the Attic phratria in the Pyanopsion , the term Gamelia is only known as a sacrifice by newlyweds who introduce their wives to their phratry. However, there is evidence of a hieros Gamos of Hera and Zeus celebrated at the end of the Gamelion , which can probably be identified with the Gamelia festival .

Hesychios of Alexandria reports that the month of the goddess Hera was sacred . Aristotle already mentioned that in him most marriages were concluded .
