The Gamkonora , Indonesian Gunung Gamkonora, is an active volcano in the north of the Indonesian island of Halmahera , which belongs to the province of Maluku Utara . With a height of 1635 meters, it is the highest point on the island of Halmahera. The Gamkonora is a stratovolcano ; it has produced an elongated series of craters along the north-south fissure.
Eruptions
The largest eruption in 1673 was accompanied by a tsunami that flooded nearby villages. In the 20th century, the volcano erupted about every 10 years on average. On July 10, 2007, the volcano erupted again. Around 8,000 people left their homes near the volcano after fire and a three-kilometer cloud of ash were seen.
