The Ganden Tashi Choeling Buddhist monastery school in the village of Päwesin in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district is one of eighteen Buddhist monastery complexes in Germany. The monastery was founded in 2002 and is in the tradition of Je Tsongkhapa of Tibetan Buddhism . In 2014 32 monks and nuns and around 20 lay people lived there . The monastery runs its own publishing house Drolma Publications, a bakery called Backwahn, and a barber shopin the village, a small shop on the property, and a shop in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The head of the monastery is Lama Dechen Losang Chöma Rinpoche . The non-profit association Buddhist Monastery School Ganden Tashi Choeling eV, based in Päwesin, is named after the monastery school and acts as the sponsor of the Ganden Tashi Choeling religious community.

Activities in the monastery

In addition to the main study of Buddhism of the Tibetan Mahayana orientation, the monastery operates several facilities in Päwesin. The monastery bakery opened in 2012.

The monastery offers visiting times with registration for interested individuals and groups, for example for school classes for excursions as part of religious instruction . Furthermore, interested parties can get a direct insight into monastic life during so-called work holidays. The monastery describes these working holidays as a suitable method to get a differentiated picture of monastery life. In addition, there is cooperation between the evangelical community of Päwesin and the Buddhist monastery school, in which, for example, ecumenical religion and ethics lessons are offered in schools in the area.

A regular public event is the annual pre-Christmas Sangha festival with winter market and theater performances on the monastery grounds. Several domestic animals, such as dogs, ponies, cats and rodents, from various emergency situations are cared for in the monastery. The monastic theater ensemble United Peace Artists emerged from the Sangha Festival . The drama group, consisting primarily of ordained monks and nuns from the community, has been performing since 2006.

financing

The monastery school is financed by donations and its own projects, including the bakery, a studio with hairdressing and foot care and a shop with Dharma literature and handicrafts.

carrier

The sponsor of the religious community is the non-profit "Association of Buddhist Monastery School Ganden Tashi Choeling eV" based in Berlin. There is also a “Society of Friends and Supporters of the Buddhist Monastery School Ganden Tashi Choeling eV” based in Päwesin.

criticism

The German Buddhist Tenzin Peljor (Michael Jäckel), who runs websites and blogs against abuse of power in Buddhist communities, writes on his website info-buddhismus.de that the German Buddhist Union applied for admission to the Ganden Tashi Choeling monastery school in 2002/2003 because of the “destructive (“Cult-like”) structures of the group ”rejected.
