The well-preserved passage grave Rishøj ( Danish Rishøj jættestue ) is located in the hilly moraine landscape "Ronesbanke" south of Præstø on the Danish island of Zealand . A hill of the same name with three passage graves lies in the Lejre commune. A burial mound with this name lies in the Holstebro commune.

Rishøj dates from the Neolithic around 3000 BC. And is a megalithic system of the funnel beaker culture (TBK). The passage grave is a type of Neolithic complex, which consists of a chamber and a structurally separated, lateral passage. This form can be found primarily in Denmark, Germany and Scandinavia as well as occasionally in France and the Netherlands. The passage grave was not alone on the moraine hill. From the register of the National Museum seven other, now disappeared systems on the hill are known.

description

The passage grave Rishøj is described for the first time in 1876, and the particularly dry walls with the brickwork between the bearing stones and the flat stones above the chamber are already noticed. Likewise the paved chamber floor, which can no longer be seen today. The surface of the bearing stones, made even by intermediate layers, forms the support surface for the four large stones, which together with the two slightly smaller cap stones at the north end form the chamber ceiling. The approximately 6.5 m long, southwest-northeast oriented chamber is formed by 14 slightly inwardly inclined bearing stones. In the middle of the chamber the approximately 6.0 m long, southeast facing corridor opens. There used to be a small entrance here that was closed by a stone or a wooden door. With the exception of the two inner ones, the panels of the intermediate masonry are missing in the corridor. The curbs that enclosed the high hill are not visible, but may be obscured by the sloped hill. National Museum information from 1876 says the passage grave was excavated in 1816 by local farmers in search of treasures - but they found nothing. An old legend tells that a chief and his horse were buried in the hill. Rishøj was placed under protection in 1908 and restored in 1912. In 2005 the chamber was made more accessible.
