Albert Schmid (mechanical engineer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert Schmid (born February 10, 1847 in Zurich ; † January 14, 1915 there ) was a Swiss mechanical engineer and the inventor of Schmid's water motor .

Life

Albert Schmid studied at the Zurich Polytechnic until 1865 and then worked at Escher Wyss & Cie , the Sulzer brothers and the Nordostbahn . Here he trained in locomotive construction and became a train driver. As such, he spent some time in England, Russia and Austria. In 1870 he returned to Zurich. There he took part in the city council's tender for the construction of water motors with an output of 1/3 to 3/4 HP for the local pressurized water network.

The valve-less motor with an oscillating cylinder designed by Schmid proved to be so effective and robust that its design earned him the nickname `` Motorenschmid '', which remained with him until the end of his life. He received various awards for his machines at the world exhibition in Vienna in 1873 . In 1876 Schmid opened the machine factory on the Sihl in Zurich.

There he built numerous types of water motors as well as other devices and machines. Among other things, he built steam locomotives. He exhibited one of these copies at the Paris World's Fair in 1878 .
