Ganlu zishu
Ganlu zishu ( Chinese 干 祿 字 書 / 干 禄 字 书 ; English Character Book for Seeking an Official Emolument ' Character book for future candidates for office' ) is a Chinese orthographic dictionary or better: character book from the time of the Tang Dynasty . It is the first character dictionary for the Chinese rule script ( kaishu ). Its author is Yan Yuansun ( Chinese 顏 元 孫 / 颜 元 孙 ), a descendant of the famous scholar Yan Shigu (顏師古).
By and large, the work is based on Yan Shigu's work Ziyang (字樣English Character Samples 'characters pattern ' ), which today is only preserved in fragments. It was intended as an official guide for the use of the candidates for the Imperial Chinese Official Examination , hence its title Ganlu , an allusion to the Analects (2:18).
The work comprises 804 characters (with a total of 1656 variants). The characters are arranged according to tone names and syllable rhymes (roughly those that are also used Qieyun ). The variants of a character are divided into three types: standardized form (正), interchangeable (通) and popular form (俗). Not every character has all three types of variants. The examiners were expected to use the "standardized form" of a character.
The text was cut in stone based on the calligraphy of Yan Zhenqing , Yan Yuansun's nephew. However, the stone is worn out.

The work is included in the old Chinese book series Yimen guangdu夷 门 广 牍.
