García Galíndez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

García Galíndez the Evil ( Spanish García Galíndez el Malo ; † probably after 836) was a count of Aragón in the early 9th century.

García Galíndez is only available from the genealogical compilation of the Counts of Aragón in the Codex de Roda . Accordingly, he was the son of a Galindo Velásquez and his wife Faquilo. He was married to Matron, daughter of Count Aznar I Galíndez of Aragón . At an unspecified point in time, he had risen against his father-in-law, expelled him from Aragón and murdered his son Centulio. Furthermore, he had separated from Matrona in order to marry a daughter of the king of Pamplona , Íñigo Arista .

Probably these violent takeover had occurred shortly before or in the year 836, the displaced Graf unless Aznar I. with that same count was the same who had died a cruel death this year after the reign of King Pippin I of Aquitaine had become apostate . García Galíndez had apparently belonged to a national Basque movement, which tried to shake off the Frankish suzerainty over the mountain peoples of the western Pyrenees , which speaks for his marriage to a daughter of Íñigo Arista, who was at the head of this resistance. In the power struggle between Emperor Ludwig the Pious and his son Pippin I, García may have taken the opportunity to drive his father-in-law, who was loyal to the emperor, from Aragón.
