The Gare Windsor is a former train station in the Canadian city of Montreal . It is located in the central arrondissement of Ville-Marie on Rue Peel . The building in neo-Romanesque style was built from 1887 to 1889 under the direction of Bruce Price and was the Montreal main station of the Canadian Pacific Railway . It has not been served by trains since 1993; instead, since a comprehensive renovation, it has been used as an office and hotel building, as well as an event space. The station is a listed building and has been a National Historic Site since 1975 .

history

The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), founded in 1881, completed the transcontinental railroad to British Columbia in November 1885 . The first trains ran from Montreal's Gare Dalhousie in June 1886 . However, this station was small and inconvenient, which is why the CPR decided to build a larger station near Square Dominion and relocate their headquarters there. The American architect Bruce Price was awarded the planning contract . He was inspired by Henry Hobson Richardson and designed a representative building in the neo-Romanesque style. The station's name is derived from its location on Rue Windsor, which was later renamed Rue Peel.

Construction work began in 1887, and the first trains ran on February 4, 1889. The growing volume of traffic made it necessary to expand the station several times. In 1900, a wing of the building was built along Rue Osborne (today Rue de La Gauchetière) to match Price's building . Another wing was built from 1909 to 1914 along Rue Craig (now Rue Saint-Antoine). This wing contained the immigration office and a waiting room , which in the first few years was reserved exclusively for the Chinese.

In 1978, the national railway company VIA Rail took over passenger services from the CPR and the Canadian National Railway (CN). From the summer of 1979, most of the earlier CPR long-distance trains ran to and from the former CN train station Gare Centrale . From 1981, only local trains ran to Vaudreuil-Dorion - Rigaud . The railway operation was finally completely stopped in 1993. The reason for this was the construction of the Center Bell ice hockey stadium on the apron, so that the Gare Windsor was completely separated from the rest of the railway network. The new Gare Lucien-L'Allier was built on the opposite side of the stadium as the starting point for the AMT suburban lines. In 1996 the CPR moved its headquarters to Calgary . In 2009 she sold the station to the Cadillac Fairview company .

Building

Today the CPR continues to use parts of the former station. Among other things, the premises of the railway police, the operations center for Québec and southern Ontario , the offices of one of the vice presidents, the property management and the company archive are located here . The Canadian Railways Arbitration Court is also located here. The rest of the building has been remodeled and serves as an office, hotel and restaurant complex. The former station concourse is open to the public; there is access to the underground , the Bell Center and the Montreal underground city .
