Gargīʿān ( Arabic قرقيعان, DMG Qarqīʿān , Persian گرگیعان) or Gargāʿūn ( Arabic قرقاعون, DMG Qarqā'ūn ), also gargee'an , is a traditional ceremony among Arab Muslims in the regions of Khuzestan and Ahvaz in Iran , in Iraq , Bahrain , Kuwait , Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates . The ritual , which originated in Ramadan , is hundreds of years old.

procedure

In the Islamic calendar, the ritual is held on the 15th night of the month of Shābān and the month of Ramadan. Children go from door to door in traditional cloakrooms and sing traditional Arabic songs. In return for this, they receive nuts or sweets from the residents.

Although there are strong external similarities to Halloween or the martinisingen or martin singing that is widespread in parts of Germany , all customs go back to different origins and the traditions are not related.

Names

The original name “Qarqīʿān” is pronounced differently: in Iran “Grgiean”, in Baghdad “Majiene” or “Kokiean”, in Bahrain “Qorqaun”, in Qatar “Qarnqve”, in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia “Qarieqan”, in Oman "Qarnqschve" and in the United Arab Emirates as "Haq Allyle".
