history

The City of Glasgow Lunacy Board's tender to build the complex in 1889 was won by Thomson & Sandilands architects . The construction of the main building and various outbuildings was completed by 1897. The construction of the hall and the nurses' home continued until 1900 and 1902 respectively. Alexander Skirving designed the Farm Colony Pavilion, built in 1902 . In 1929 at the latest, the facility was renamed the Gartloch Institution . Between 1948 and 1969 it was called Gartloch Mental Hospital , only to be simplified to Gartloch Hospital . In 1975 the hospital was modernized.

After the possible closure of the facility had been discussed in 1991, the buildings were put up for sale to investors in 1994. By July 1996 the last buildings had been cleared and operations ceased. Despite various plans, no investor has been found to further develop the main building since then. As early as 1994, the buildings were included in the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. Since then, the situation has deteriorated noticeably as a result of the vacancy. In 2014, the unrestored main buildings were classified as ruins.

The short-lived series Takin 'over the Asylum was filmed at Gartloch Hospital.

description

The neo-renaissance complex is located off the beaten track on Bishop Loch in the far northeast of Glasgow. Planned to accommodate paying patients from an upper class, the main building is lavishly designed in the style of the French Renaissance with details from the Scottish Baronial . The almost symmetrical building is made of red sandstone and includes a wing with dining room and kitchen, a boiler house with laundry and a workshop. The main facade of the main building is 13 axes wide. Two identically ornamented towers rise up, which also serve as stair towers and water towers.
