Garuda Indonesia flight 152 was a national scheduled flight of the Indonesian airline Garuda Indonesia from Jakarta to Medan , Sumatra , on which an Airbus A300 was flown into a mountain near Medan on September 26, 1997.
The Airbus A300B4-220 with the aircraft registration PK-GAI was flown into a forest area about 29 km from the destination airport when visibility was poor. All 234 people on board were killed in the accident.
The crash was the 1997 aviation accident with the highest number of fatalities and the worst ever in Indonesian aviation .
Starting position
Garuda Indonesia flight 152 was approaching Medan Polonia airport from Jakarta and received course instructions from air traffic control for an ILS approach to runway 05. Due to forest fires in the region, visibility was poor with visibility of only 600 to 800 meters .
The captain had worked for Garuda Indonesia for more than 20 years and had more than 12,000 hours of flight experience.

At around 1.30 p.m. local time , there was a misunderstanding between the pilots and air traffic control as to whether the pilots should make a left or a right turn. A few seconds later the Airbus grazed the treetops and crashed 18 km from Medan, near the village of Pancur Batu, which is almost 1000 m above sea level.
