Gary Ablett Sr. , full name Gary Robert Ablett (born October 1, 1961 in Drouin , Victoria ) is a former Australian Australian football player who is widely recognized as one of the best players in the Australian Football League (AFL). Ablett's special abilities included being able to shoot the ball 60 meters with both feet, his enormous acceleration from standing and his good jumping ability. His rousing game earned him multiple nicknames, including Gazza the Great , Superman, and God .

He gained fame in 1994 for his Mark of the Century against Collingwood Football Club at the Melbourne Cricket Ground , where he overran two opponents, screwing his body into the air and catching the ball with one hand.

career

Ablett grew up in Latrobe Valley with three older sisters and four older brothers, two of whom already played professional football.

His career in the Victorian Football League (from 1989 AFL) began in 1982 at Hawthorn Football Club , where he played as a reserve player in only six games. In 1984 he signed a contract with Geelong Football Club , where he played a total of 242 games by the end of his career in 1996. In his first year he scored 33 goals in 15 games and was named the club's “best and fairest player”. In 1995 and 1996 he served as cocaptain for the team. During his time at Geelong he scored a total of 1021 goals and is considered Geelong's best goalscorer. He also won the Coleman Medal three times in a row as the best goalscorer in the league in the early 1990s . Although Ablett reached the championship final four times, he never won a league title, but he was awarded the 1989 Norm Smith Medal as the best outfield player in the final. In 1996 he was placed in the AFL Team of the Century and inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
