The beginning of the "Garz theses"

Garzer Thesen is the short title of a publication by the German internist Gerhardt Katsch , who was professor for internal medicine at the University of Greifswald from 1928 and who founded the first home for the social medical care of diabetics in Europe in September 1930 in Garz on the island of Rügen . The publication, with which Gerhardt Katsch shaped the basics and the development of diabetes therapy in Germany for several decades, was one of the most important German-language program publications in the early history of diabetology .

In the “Garzer Thesen”, which appeared in the Klinische Wochenschrift in 1937 and thus were published around 15 years after the discovery of insulin , Gerhardt Katsch laid out his principles for the treatment of diabetes mellitus on five pages. He postulated the principle of “productive care "With diabetics as the central basis of his treatment concept and refused to see diabetics as" incurable metabolic cripples ". Rather, his theses were based on the principle that a diabetic with optimal therapy could be “fully capable of working and enjoyment” and should therefore be regarded as “partially healthy”.

The 14 treatment principles formulated in the “Garz Theses” were based on a combination of insulin intake, adapted nutrition , physical activity and patient training. In addition, Gerhardt Katsch viewed diabetes mellitus not only as a medical, but also as a social problem, and called for an undogmatic and individualized approach to treatment. He pointed out that the success of the therapy should not be judged by the discharge findings, but by the diabetic's “ability to work and social performance”. The basis of the “Garzer Diet” is a “practical diet” and “a diet approaching normal nutrition”, which, however, is determined by “moderation and purposeful guidance”.
