The gasometer Tiefstack was one of the largest above-ground gas containers for storing town gas in Central Europe. It was the west of two gas tanks that the Hamburger Gaswerke (Hein Gas) built in the 1930s on their premises in the Hamburg district of Rothenburgsort . While the eastern, smaller gas container fell victim to the bombing raids in 1943, the much larger, western gasometer survived the bombing raids, which largely destroyed Rothenburgsort.
The structure was imposing 99 meters high and could even be seen clearly from the jetties in the port of Hamburg . In 1976 the Tiefstack gasometer was one of the 15 tallest buildings in Hamburg. In the course of the conversion of the gas supply to natural gas , the gas tank became superfluous and demolished during renovation work on the site of the gas works from 1984 to 1986.
