Live and act

Gasparo Zanetti's life dates can only be narrowed down by his known works. In 1626 he published a two-part version of an originally three-part canzone by a composer named GD Rivolta. Above all, Zanetti became known for his most important tradition, a work he compiled as a violin school, the “Il scolaro di Gasparo Zannetti per imparar a suonare di violino, et altri stromenti. Nuovamente dato in luce, ove si contengono gli veri principii dell'arie, passi e mezzi, sartarelli, gagliarde, zoppe, balletti, alemane, et correnti, accompagnate con tutte le quattro parti cioe canto, alto, tenore e basso. Con una nuova aggiunta d'intavolatura de numeri non più datti alla stampa, solo che dal detto Zannetti, la qual servirà ancora à tutte le sudette quattro parti [...]. ” , Which he had published in 1645 by Carlo Camagno in Milan. This print, rediscovered and described in the early 19th century by the music researcher Peter Lichtenthal , is probably a second edition. According to the custom of the time, all dances have the names of noble families from Milan or musicians as headings.

Of educational interest is the fact that every dance is accompanied by a tablature that shows the fingering (all in the first position) for all string instruments, as well as the letters "P" for upstroke ( pontar in sù ) and "T" for downstroke ( tirare in giù ), based on the model given by Francesco Rognoni Taeggio in his Selva di varii passagi ... from 1620. Only two copies of this print are currently known, which are in the possession of the Bibliothèque de France in Paris and the Biblioteca del Conservatorio in Florence.
