History

There were originally three houses on the property of today's inn, which were given the numbers 43, 44 and 45 in 1792 under the Prussian government.

House number 43 was owned by Endres Strien in 1518. In 1720 the farm was divided. In 1796 the half yard consisted of 20 acres of field and 2 12 acres of meadow. At the end of the 19th century the original courtyard was demolished.

House number 44 was owned by Peter Wirth in 1518. The courtyard was subsequently removed and the half courtyard of house no.43 was built in its place in 1720. In 1796, 20 acres of fields and 2 12 acres of meadow belonged to the half yard . In 1925 the building was demolished.

House no. 45 was owned by Steffan Hansen in 1505/13. Originally it was just a farm, since 1654 it has also been an inn and tavern. In 1667 the farm had 70 12 acres of fields and 6 days of meadow. In 1729 the farm was destroyed. 50 12 acres of fields and 2 12 days of meadow work were given away by the Tafernwirtschaft, so that only 20 acres of fields and 3 12 days of meadow work belonged to it. In 1776 Georg Holzöder became the owner of house no.45, to which house no.9 also belonged. He used this quarter courtyard instead of house number 45 as an inn. In 1783 Holzöder exchanged house no. 9 for house no. 32, which he ran as an inn instead of house no. In 1796, 20 acres of field and 2 12 acres of meadow belonged to this half yard . In 1808 this half-yard was smashed. A quarter courtyard still belonged to house no. 45. In 1834, under Johann Georg Holzöder, house no. 45 was operated again as an inn, which was also a brewery with poultry justice. House number 32 was smashed, so that only after 23 it belonged to house number 45. The Bischoff family has owned house no.45 since 1860.

In November 1853, Wilhelm Löhe had the first three heads of the still-to-be-founded deaconess institution billeted in the “Gasthaus zur Sonne” - as the inn in house no. 45 was already called back then. Six deaconess students and two interns lived with them. On May 9, 1854, the deaconess institute was opened in the Gasthaus zur Sonne and practical and theological lessons have been given in these rooms since then. With the completion of the mother house on October 12, 1854, the Diakonissenanstalt moved there.

On August 26, 1939 - before the start of the Second World War - the inn had to accommodate the Landesschützenenzug 115 / XIII, whose task it was to guard the ammunition plant built in Neuendettelsau. His presence is documented until January 1942.

Building description

The Gasthaus zur Sonne is a two-storey building from the 18th century - in essence probably older - with a three-storey gable, saddle roof, plastered field structure, rusticated corner pilasters and arched portal with shell keystone and Eyb's coat of arms. The building has floor divisions on the west side. The wrought-iron pub sign also dates from the 18th century. More recent additions are attached to the east and south sides.
