The former Gasthof zum Falken at Bahnhofstrasse 4 in Esslingen am Neckar on the corner of the Kronenhof is a historic building from the 19th century and a cultural monument .

history

The building in neo -renaissance style is one of the numerous catering establishments that settled near the Esslingen train station in the second half of the 19th century. It was built in 1860 according to plans by Friedrich Metzger. The half - timbered building , which at that time was still two-story , was faced with clinker bricks.

In 1889 the building was expanded and in 1897 it was raised. The inn, which also offered overnight accommodation and was equipped with steam heating and running water, was operated at times by Theodor Krehl.

The inscription "Gasthof zum Falken by Theodor Krehl" between the ground floor and first floor was replaced by "Gasthof Falken" in later years.

Falconer

A blind window was used as a picture surface on the second floor . A falconer is shown in front of Esslingen Castle , holding his animal in his left hand. One wing of the falcon is sculptured.

Inside the house, wall-mounted design elements from the construction period have been preserved, such as the stairs, wooden wall cladding, stucco profiles and apartment closures.

Demolition plans

The extension to a four-story building at the end of the 19th century led to structural problems, according to Mayor Wilfried Wallbrecht. It was almost a miracle that the house was still standing, explained Wallbrecht in 2013. The Kreissparkasse Esslingen-Nürtingen , which had acquired the building in 2010 and initially planned a renovation, applied for approval of the demolition after it had been found that a renovation would be more complex than expected. In addition to the static problems, fungal and pest infestation of the framework construction and damage to the structure from penetrating moisture were mentioned. To protect passers-by from falling parts of the clinker cladding, a wooden protective roof was installed over the sidewalk. At the end of 2013 it became clear that the building would be preserved: The building was to be renovated and integrated into the new building for the Sparkasse branch planned at this point and to serve as a customer center. The renovations should drag on from the beginning of 2014 to mid-2015. In the meantime (September 2016) the building is back in its old splendor, at least externally. It becomes part of the overall complex. The adjacent parts of the building in Bahnhofstrasse and Am Kronenhof are currently in the shell construction phase.
