Gastrodermis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lining of the entire digestive cavity ( gastric space or gastrovascular space) of cnidarians and jellyfish is called gastrodermis . It consists of a columnar epithelium with nutrient and gland cells . The gland cells release digestive enzymes into the gastric space. The nutrient cells then phagocytize the food particles. The cilia of the epithelium generate a stream of water and ensure the distribution of nutrients. The gastrodermis is derived from the endoderm and is separated from the epidermis by the mesogloea .
