The Hopfengarten restaurant is a listed former restaurant in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is located on the east side of Leipziger Chaussee in the Hopfengarten district of Magdeburg , at Leipziger Chaussee 57.

History and architecture

In 1912, the long, single - storey half-timbered house was built as a garden tavern for the Buckauer Dampf-Bierbrauerei Reichardt & Schneidewin . Planning and execution were carried out by the construction company Hanack & Ludwig. At the time of construction, the property was still part of the district of Lemsdorf, which was incorporated into Magdeburg in 1910 . A little further north-east of the restaurant, the garden city Hopfengarten was created during this time.

The building rests on a high basement. The middle of the building is designed as a central pavilion and covered with a hipped roof. Flat side wings connect to the north and south. The simple framework is characterized by closely arranged stands and designed strictly orthogonally without struts. It is based on the English country house architecture. The compartments are lined with bricks. The windows are arranged as ribbon windows and are larger than the individual compartments. This construction gives the building a light appearance. The windows are designed as lattice windows and have been preserved in the original.

During the GDR era , a youth club was run in the house.

In 1994 the building was rented by the University Sports Association Medicine Magdeburg eV, which maintains its office and club rooms there. With the support of the association's members and funding, the house was renovated and expanded. The old coal heating was converted to natural gas. The neighboring hall, used as a sports hall, received a new roof as well as new lighting, parquet, changing rooms and sanitary rooms. The courtyard was also redesigned and greened.

In the local register of monuments , the restaurant is listed as a monument under registration number 094 82544 .

The building is a typical example of restoration and spa architecture at the turn of the 20th century.
