Gates of Ishtar was a melodic death metal band from Luleå , Sweden . At the suggestion of bassist Harald Åberg, the band called itself Gates of Ishtar , which is derived from a Babylonian goddess who seduces men and later kills them. Andreas Johansson designed the band logo for this.

history

The band was founded in 1992 by Mikael Sandorf, Andreas Johansson, Stefan Nilsson and Harald Åberg. A short time later, Thomas Jutenfäldt was joined by a second guitarist. In May 1995 the band recorded their demo Seasons of Frost in the Lucichrist Studio . The demo earned the band a deal with the Finnish record company Spinefarm Records , which signed the band for an album. In early 1996 the band went to the Tico-Tico-Studio in Finland to record their debut album. A Bloodred Path was released in June of the same year. Since the contract only ran for one album, the band received numerous offers from other companies and because they were not satisfied with the promotional work of Spinefarm, the band signed a contract for two albums with the German label Invasion Records .

Harald Åberg left the band shortly before the recordings for the second album. At the suggestion of Thomas Jutenfäldt, Danjel Röhr was engaged for the recordings. In early 1997 the band recorded their second album, The Dawn of Flames, at Unisound's studio in Örebro under the direction of Dan Swanö . The album was released in March. During the year Johansson, Jutenfäldt and Nilsson left the band. They were replaced by Urban Carlsson and Oskar Karlsson. In addition to the vocals, Mikael Sandorf also took over the bass.

In 1998 the third album At Dusk and Forever was released , which received good reviews. Shortly after the album was released, the owner of Invasion Records mysteriously disappeared. Invasion Records went bankrupt and the band broke up. Sandorf and Carlsson then formed the band The Duskfall .
