Gato Fedorento (German: "Stinking Cat") is a Portuguese comedy television series.

prehistory

The four friends started doing skits on an internet blog. They chose the name Gato Fedorento (German: "Stinking Cat") based on a music track from the American television series Friends called Smelly Cat .

Success story

The television broadcaster SIC then had skits produced by them as part of other programs and then offered them their own program. They did not number the four seasons, but named them after typical, simple Portuguese family names. This was part of the parodies of their skits, which they often showed as naive, uneducated country dwellers or simple-minded townspeople who all had the same surname in each season, which was aimed at slight criticism of the uniform masses. The first ( Série Fonseca ) and the second season ( Série Meireles ) were great successes with the public and were subsequently released as DVDs. After differences with the broadcaster about the editing of the scene, the poor remuneration and the airtime of the episodes, they left SIC and accepted the RTP's offer for the next two seasons ( Série Barbosa and Série Lopes da Silva ).

After the four seasons, the four fundamentally changed their concept. They were now producing a program called Gato Fedorento - Diz Que É Uma Espécie de Magazine ( just say it was some kind of magazine ). The four sat in armchairs on a stage in front of an audience and talked about current topics from politics, sport and society with actors from sketches. Well-known characters from previous seasons appeared, and language, puns and the four actors remained the same. In addition, there were very popular parodies of well-known politicians from all parties, especially Prime Minister José Sócrates and opposition leader Manuela Ferreira Leite . This format was also very successful and was released on DVD.

After the responsible program director at RTP (Nuno Santos) moved to SIC, the four of them from Gato Fedorento also moved back to SIC in 2008 . There was a fifth season ( Zé Carlos ).

In 2009, a new format came with Gato Fedorento Esmiúça os Sufrágios (English: smelly cat dismembered the elections ). For the parliamentary and local elections in September and October, respectively, they dealt with the candidates, the voters and the elections in daily 25-minute broadcasts. Influenced by the American The Daily Show , they caricatured politics in interviews, parodies and exaggerated representations.

Content and reception

The concept remained the same in all four seasons. The four main actors, who themselves were quickly referred to as Gato Fedorento in common parlance and the media , portrayed exaggerated everyday situations in alternating characters, in which they, for example, led everyday phrases to absurdity, or ridiculed media scandals or the type of celebrity reporting pulled. In addition to the facial expressions and gestures, it was above all the wealth of ideas and the pun that convinced the audience and TV criticism. The series was largely free of filthy expressions or fecal language, and the actors spoke good Portuguese . They refrained from all too flat and superficial gags and made no direct reference to living people.

As a result, the four actors of Gato Fedorento received a number of advertising contracts (including with their own sketch productions), and they became well known in Portugal, especially the tall Ricardo Araújo Pereira, although the four mostly performed together. The series' DVD releases achieved high sales. The box from the first season was the best-selling DVD in Portugal during the 2004 Christmas season
