Gavriil Gawriilowitsch Gustawson ( Russian Густавсон, Гавриил Гавриилович , English transliteration Gavril Gavrilovich Gustavson , scientific transliteration Gavriil Gavriilovič Gustavson * December 22, 1842 . Jul / January 3, 1843 greg. In St. Petersburg , † April 13 jul. / 26th April 1908 greg. ) Was a Russian chemist .

Life

Gustavson finished his studies at the University of Petersburg in 1865, from 1869 to 1875 he worked there as a research assistant to Alexander Michailowitsch Butlerow . Then he was appointed professor at the Agricultural Academy in Moscow. 1892-1900 Gustavson directed the higher women's education in St. Petersburg.

Scientific work

Gustavson's extensive work is unusually broad and includes research on general and organic chemistry . In 1877 Gustavson discovered the catalytic effect of the Lewis acid of aluminum halides (e.g. aluminum trichloride ) in several organic chemical reactions. In the process he discovered unstable complex compounds made of aluminum halide and organic substances. (so-called "Gustavson Ferments"). He investigated organometallic intermediates in Friedel-Crafts alkylation . Gustavson synthesized cyclopropane from 1,3-dibromopropane by the action of zinc dust ( Gustavson reaction ).
