description

Hotels or shops often use the term to welcome homosexual guests and customers and address them as a target group as well as heterosexuals . Gays and lesbian people ( gays ) should be taught that they do not have to fear any disadvantages in advice and support. This is joined by the term gay only , which is exclusively about the homosexual clientele, which is also referred to as a gay hotel . Another new term has been introduced in recent years, so-called heterofriendly establishments. These are companies that primarily address gay customers, but also do not want to close themselves off to straight people. As a rule, children cannot stay overnight in these establishments.

Gay and bisexual shop owners often use the rainbow flag as a sign that gays and lesbians are welcome, or that this is a special business aimed primarily at gays and lesbians.

Some companies can also be found in their own industry guides, some of which appear periodically. There are also various websites that offer either specialized directories or the option of labeling businesses as gay-friendly.

The term is most widespread in English-speaking countries and in the international tourism industry. In order to be considered gay-friendly there, there should at least be no funny looks or whispers and the wish for a double bed should be fulfilled and not converted into two single beds in the same room because there are two same-sex people. In addition, if necessary, information material about relevant places in the area should be kept ready.

Companies that are gay-friendly are often committed to diversity management , have anti-discrimination guidelines and offer their same-sex-loving employees the same services as couples who are different-sexes, especially with regard to partners. In the United States , the Human Rights Campaign creates an annual Corporate Equality Index that rates the "friendliness" of large companies.
