biography

Gay Woods was born into a musical family as Gabriel Corcoran. She started singing at an early age, and with her brothers she shared a love of hillbilly and blues . A neighbor was Terry Woods , a little older , with whom she played as a duo from 1963 and whom she married in May 1968.

Terry was one of the founding members of the British folk rock group Steeleye Span in 1969 and brought Gay as the second singer in the band. With her they took their debut album Hark! The Village Wait on. A short interlude with the folk band Dr. Strangely Strange followed. Then the two founded the Woods Band , but there Gay is only represented on the first album.

Back in Ireland , she and her husband released the album Backwoods as Gay & Terry Woods in 1975 , followed by three more albums and a single by 1978 . In 1979 the two separated, in 1980 the marriage was divorced. In the same year, Gay founded the Irish new wave group Auto Da Fé , which released a studio album and several singles from 1982. There was also a live album and a sampler .

In 1988 Gay Woods withdrew temporarily from the music scene, and had a daughter with a new partner. In 1994 she was asked by the band Steeleye Span to support Maddy Prior on the upcoming tour . The concerts were a success and led to the album Time in 1996 , on which, as once on Hark! The Village Wait , the two singers can be heard together. After Maddy Prior's departure the following year, Terry Woods became the lead singer of the group, which she left after the album Bedlam Born in January 2001. Since then she has been working as a solo artist.
