The old switchboard building is located in Belgrade at Kosovska ulica 47. It was built as a switchboard according to a design by Branko Tanazević and is the first of its kind in Serbia . It was completed in 1908. The third floor was added after the First World War . The building has been under state protection as a cultural asset of great importance since 1981.

Appearance

In terms of spatial and structural aspects, it is based on the traditions of academism , while the design is derived from the Serbian-Byzantine style. With a functional floor plan and a fundamentally simple architectural composition, the focus is on the design of the corner part of the building with a characteristic dome . The facade is asymmetrical, with a flat risalit of greater width at one end of the building and large window openings that take up much of the facade. The abundantly applied bas-relief decoration, reduced almost to the level of the facade, consists of stylized motifs from the legacy of the Morava school (rosettes, ornaments, geometric designs, chess boxes). In addition to the successful realization of the Serbian-Byzantine style in Belgrade architecture by a main representative of this style, this building also has historical significance as a representative functional building and documents the development of the telephone service in Serbia in the early 20th century. The building was depicted on the 50 million dinars banknote from 1993. Conservation work was carried out in 1988.
