society

The Gebetshaus Augsburg e. V. von Jutta and Johannes Hartl in 2005. The purpose of the association is to glorify God through prayer and praise around the clock. According to its own information, the association has 15 members.

history

The first nights of prayer took place in the 1990s. a. Travel to monasteries and intensive study of literature on prayer and mysticism .

During a visit to the “International House of Prayer” (IHOP) in Kansas City, on the model of which the “House of Prayer” was later inaugurated, the vision of 24/7 prayer gained further clarity. Jutta and Johannes Hartl felt it was a call from God to "open a center in Germany in which prayer does not fall silent by day or night."

The Catholic parish to the Hl. Twelve Apostles in Augsburg-Hochzoll was the first stop of the initiative. The first prayer meetings took place in a private apartment, the open lecture evenings in the parish church. A prayer room was rented and the first conferences and training courses followed. Since September 2011 people have been praying continuously in the prayer room. In spring 2012 the Gebetshaus e. V. owned a property at Pilsener Straße 6 in Augsburg, where he is still based today.

Teaching

Teaching and proclamation takes place in the house of prayer according to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. There is close cooperation with the Diocese of Augsburg . A specially commissioned priest regularly takes part in team meetings of the association. The prayer house is not a church community.

financing

The initiative is financed through donations and the income from Gebetshaus Augsburg Services GmbH . This was founded in February 2016 to produce and sell all kinds of media (books, CDs, merchandising, etc.), to run the prayer house café and guest house (“Prayer Homes”), to hold seminars and a discipleship school handle related speaker fees and income as well as all related activities.

There are currently 50 permanent employees in the prayer house. The level of salaries is based on the public service. The team also includes around 100 volunteers. Johannes Buggele is the managing director for all commercial aspects.

Conferences

The MEHR conference is an ecumenical conference of faith that has taken place every two years. It is organized by the Augsburg House of Prayer and has seen growing numbers of visitors. According to the organizers, around 11,000 people came in 2018. The next conference will only take place in January 2020.

For the first time in June 2018, the Augsburg prayer house organized the “Schøn Conference”. This had no clearly Christian orientation, the content was about “beauty and inspiration, less about religion”. Contributing artists were u. a. Patrick Kelly , Wim Wenders , Samuel Koch and Johannes Hartl himself.

Mission Campus

The prayer house is planning or building a guest wing, a large kitchen and a meeting hall for up to 1000 participants on the adjacent building site under the title “Mission Campus”. In the future, seminars, training courses and conferences will take place in these rooms. The donation project is currently on hold. It is also intended to build an official chapel. A major donor has paid for this.

criticism

In publications by Christian-conservative organizations and publishers, Johannes Hartl's prayer practice and teachings and the orientation of the house of prayer he directed are criticized.

The chairman of the Biblical Association , Michael Kotsch , occupied himself e.g. B. in an article that appeared in the Bible and Church on April 24, 2017, in detail with the orientation of the house of prayer and its leader. In it he questions the answers to prayer that Hartl claims, criticizes the emphasis on long prayer times and points to the consistently Roman Catholic orientation of the house of prayer.

The latter is also reflected in other Christian-fundamentalist and ecumenical- critical media, in which evangelicals are warned against allowing themselves to be blinded uncritically by Roman Catholic teaching by familiar pious terms.

Johannes Hartl and the house of prayer are viewed critically by Roman Catholic believers, especially because of their charismatic orientation. Religious sociologist Armin Nassehi described the “multi-conference” as “low-threshold”. There is a “reduction to aesthetics and emotionality” instead.

In articles in the Augsburger Allgemeine , critical issues relating to the financing of the house of prayer were publicly discussed.
