The so-called Gebhard building of the former silk weaving mill Gebhard & Co. AG on Kaiserstraße was built in 1875. The company was founded in 1797 when three Bergische merchants in Hardenberg (today in Neviges ) founded the company Bernhard Cahen et Leeser and relocated to Elberfeld in 1807 . A new establishment, first as OHG Gebhard & Co and then as Gebhard & Co. AG , took place in 1859 by Franz Josef Gebhard in Elberfeld.

The headquarters of the company, which was involved in the manufacture and sale of silk fabrics, was then moved to Vohwinkel on February 1, 1886. The conversion into a stock corporation (AG) took place on January 17, 1907. The listing on the stock exchange took place in Berlin and in 1948 in Düsseldorf. In addition to the location in Vohwinkel, the company had a branch in Monschau and at times employed over 2000 people. The bankruptcy took place in 1974.

Archaeological find

According to a newspaper report, two archaeological finds were made during the construction . In the report in the General-Anzeiger für Elberfeld-Barmen on December 5, 1927, it is stated that a wooden water pipe was discovered when the foundations were excavated at a depth of three to four meters . A 50 centimeter thick oak tree trunk was found, which was divided lengthways in the middle and had a circular opening with a diameter of 20 centimeters.

At the same time, a well-preserved ancient coin was found in a column in the trunk . The Roman coin dates from the year 194 AD and shows the bust of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus (193–211) inclined to the right with armor and laurel wreath. The inscription reads: "Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax Augustus Imperator III". On the back there are three virgins walking to the left with cornucopia in their left hand and scales in their right. Here the inscription reads with the addition of the abbreviations: "Monetae Augusti Consulis II patris Patriae - Senatus Consulto."

The finds were taken into custody by the city, and Hans Lehner , director of the Provincial Museum in Bonn, was commissioned to carry out further investigations . The report also said: "This find from the end of the 2nd century could indicate that the Vohwinkel valley was already settled 16 centuries ago."

After bankruptcy

An ice rink was opened on April 24, 1980 . At that time it was one of the largest covered ice rinks in Europe. It was later closed again. The building also houses a dance school, the post office , several shops, doctors 'and lawyers' offices.

Fire damage

The former ice rink can be seen from the parking lot after the fire damage

On September 23, 2006, after a water pipe burst and a short circuit, there was a smoldering fire, which caused only minor damage of an estimated 20,000 euros. Only two days later there was another major fire in the rooms of the former ice rink. This fire caused considerable damage of an estimated 300,000 euros, parts of the building have been in danger of collapsing since then. Before that, there had been a small fire in the dance school in January of the same year, which caused an estimated damage of 500,000 euros.

demolition

According to the original plans, only the intermediate area, which housed the former and burned down ice rink, should be torn down and gutted. Large retail outlets are to be set up in its place. The demolition work was extended to the entire building ensemble in 2015.
