features

Mountain grasshopper ( Stauroderus scalaris ), female

With a body length of 18 to 21 millimeters (males) and 23 to 27 millimeters (females), this species is slightly larger than the related Chorthippus species. Their body is brown, yellowish or olive green in color. The rear rails ( tibia ) are red or yellow. The hind wings are dark brown. The fore wings of the male are dark at the tips, with conspicuous wing veins: the medial and costal fields are enlarged and regularly veined across. The females have light-colored forewings, the medial field of which is also enlarged but veined in a reticulate manner.

habitat

The mountain grasshopper lives on dry, stony mountain meadows. In Germany, the species that used to be found in the Harz, Swabian Alb and Allgäu has become very rare and can only be found in the southern Black Forest. There are even larger populations in the Swiss Alps.

singing

Song of the mountain grasslands

Adults occur from July to September. The males can make many different sounds. Usually, moving the thighs up and down produces a soft, whirring sound, followed by a hard snarling sound when the thighs are pulled up: (dsch-trr - dsch-trr - dsch-trr ...). In addition, a soft flight snarling can be heard in both sexes when flying.

Hazard and protection

The mountain grasshopper is classified as critically endangered (category 1) on the red list of endangered species in Germany .
