Gebouw Batavia
The Gebouw Batavia is a building on the Prins Hendrikkade 84-85 in the center of Amsterdam . It is not far from the Sint-Nicolaaskerk, opposite the Amsterdam Centraal train station .
The owner of the office building , which was built between 1918 and 1920, was NV Batavia Arak Maatschappij , a trading company for Arrak from Jakarta (formerly Batavia ) in what was then the Dutch East Indies . The house has five floors and a basement at the rear, which is directly adjacent to the Oudezijds Kolk canal . The architect JH Slot designed the complex made of reinforced concrete, clad with brown bricks , in the style of the expressionist Amsterdam School . The monkey sculptures and elephant reliefs on the richly decorated facade are believed to have been made by the sculptors Jaap Kaas, Johan Altorf or Jan Trapman. Since 2001, the building stands as Rijksmonument under monument protection .
