The Gebrüder-Heinrich-Stift is a former social foundation at Lindenstrasse 3 in Luckenwalde .

history

In the 19th century, the Luckenwalde brothers, Ferdinand (1816-1892) and Karl Wilhelm Heinrich (1821-1896), were wealthy cloth manufacturers in Luckenwalde . They made the city the main heir of their fortune, which amounted to more than 1 million marks . and determined in a will that after deducting a few legacies, a hospital for disabled factory workers was to be built in Lindenstrasse .

The building was inaugurated on October 9, 1898 - the construction costs amounted to 295,000 marks. The plans submitted in 1898 largely corresponded to the execution. Otto Techow from Steglitz ( Berlin ) provided the design , who also made static calculations and comments on the project. The Heinrichstift was built according to the implementation plans of the master bricklayer Richard Bornkant .

The house was initially lit by gas lamps and had central heating from the start. In the absence of a municipal water pipe, running water was initially supplied from a 25-meter-deep well that was pumped into a concrete tank under the roof.

The hospital at that time contained 14 double and 39 single small apartments, a prayer room in the rear transverse wing as well as an infirmary, storage rooms and dining room in the basement.

Workers who had worked in the founder's factory for at least ten years during the lifetime of the founders were initially entitled to accommodation in the home. They had access to: free apartment and heating, free cooking gas, free wood for the laundry room, free use of the bathroom, free medical care and medication as well as free use of the garden.

Most of the foundation's assets were lost due to inflation . Initially, the company was subsidized by public funds, later it was completely taken over. In 1930 the city of Luckenwalde was given the right to determine the occupancy itself.

After 1945 the Gebrüder-Heinrich-Stift continued to be used as an old people's and nursing home. On July 1, 1952, it became the city's “home after work”. On September 30, 2001, the use as a retirement and nursing home ended and the building has been empty since then and is exposed to decay.

In the spring of 2012, the Baden-Württemberg entrepreneur Weng acquired the listed building in order to renovate it and give it a new use. This renovation includes the heating system, cellar, roof, supply connections and dry rot renovation.
