Otto Techow (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Techow (born January 16, 1848 in Brandenburg an der Havel ; † June 28, 1919 in Berlin ) was a German architect and Prussian construction officer . Techow designed, among other things, the plans for several water towers in Berlin.

Life

Techow studied at the Berlin Building Academy and then worked for the city. With the title of Privy Building Councilor , he had been working as a construction officer at the Upper Presidium of the Province of Brandenburg from around 1900 , and from 1908 to 1918 in the position of a state building officer . Techow was also a member of the Teltow Canal Construction Commission .

In 1886 he designed the Steglitz high school and the water tower on the Fichtenberg , the highest point in Berlin-Steglitz at 68 meters . The imposing 40 meter high tower is still the landmark of the mountain today. Right next to the water tower on Paul-Henckels-Platz, Techow had completed his own home two years earlier, which is still undamaged and much admired today, the Villa Anna , which he born after his wife Anna Techow. von Maltitz had named. The playful brick building with its angled turrets is stylistically similar to the neighboring water tower and underwent a fundamental interior renovation in 2004/2005.

Techow was a member of the Freemason Lodge Bruderbund am Fichtenberg and until his death national grandmaster of the Great National Mother Lodge "To the three world balls" . Together with the architect Georg Lübke, he built the Logenhaus in Berlin-Steglitz, Albrechtstraße 112a, from 1893–1894. The two-storey clinker building had a square tower and was completely destroyed in the Second World War.

The Techowpromenade in Berlin's Reinickendorf district and the Techowbrücke, which leads Gersdorfstrasse across the Teltow Canal in Berlin-Tempelhof, are reminiscent of him .
