Gebrüder Senf was the name of a trading company and publisher in Leipzig in the field of philately that went back to the brothers Louis Senf (1853-1940) and Richard Senf (1856-1941), but was operated jointly by both of them for only nine years.

history

Louis and Richard Senf were the sons of the timber merchant Johann Gottlob August Senf (1811–1878), who owned a house at Frankfurter Straße 38 (today Elsterstraße 48). The brothers collected stamps as children and began cataloging them. As a 16-year-old, the younger Richard traded postage stamps in his parents' house from 1872. This year is given later as the date of the company's foundation, although the business was initially taken over by the older brother Louis in 1874 and it was not until April 1881 that the two came together as the Senf brothers.

In 1874, the twice-monthly Illustrated Briefmarken-Journal was published, which was initially published by Louis because of the fact that he had come of age and from 1881 by both brothers. It was the highest-circulation German philatelic journal with a circulation of up to 30,000 and was not discontinued until the Second World War .

In 1890 Louis Senf left the Senf Brothers Company and Richard Senf became its sole owner. Louis Senf founded a stamp business for his daughters Katherine and Charlotte, which is listed as Zur Briefmarkenbörse from 1904 on at Gewandgäßchen 1 and from 1909 until the war destruction in 1943 at Universitätsstrasse 18.

The catalog is an important product from Gebrüder Senf. After a few special catalogs in the Briefmarken-Journal, the Senf Brothers Illustrated Postage Stamp Catalog was published in 1892 , later briefly “Der Senf”, which was issued until the 1940s.

After a few different addresses in the Ostvorstadt from 1881 onwards, most of which were in the publishing house bookstore, the Gebrüder Senf bookstore was located at Augustusplatz 8 from 1904 onwards. From 1930 the address books are at Markt 9; this is the König-Albert-Haus , which also includes the Barfußgäßchen 8 shop. At that time the business already had a new owner (Heinrich Neubauer). The business stayed here through the GDR and after the reunification , until it was closed in 2008.
