precursor

Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung (1870–1873)

Between October 1870 and June 1873 31 issues of a newspaper with the title Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung appeared in Dresden . The magazine count consists of numbers 1–33, with numbers 29 and 30 never actually being used. The magazine had the subtitle "Organ for the entire interests of postage stamping" and the Mulready cover served as the cover picture .

In 1870/71 Alfred Moschkau was the editor of this paper; The editors were Gustav Bauschke (* 1840, † 1879) and Alwin Zschiesche (* 1843, † 1929).

Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung (1883–1890)

From January 1883 to November 1890 another magazine, the Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung, was published in Dresden. Its editor and publisher was Ernst Wilhelm Grossmann and it was a continuation of the newspaper "Dresdner Illustrierter Briefmarken-Journal" (formerly "Allgemeine Briefmarken-Anzeiger").

Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung (1890-1923)

On October 18, 1890, Hans Brendicke founded a new monthly magazine in Berlin with the title Illustrierte Zeitschrift für Postwertzeichenkunde , which later bore the main title Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung . In the 1890s, one of the regular authors was Carl Lindenberg .

In 1896 Hugo Krötzsch from Leipzig took over the publishing house. At an exhibition in Paris in 1900, she was awarded a gold medal alongside the American Journal of Philately . In the years after 1900 the magazine was considered one of the three most important philatelic magazines in the world, alongside the Gibbons Monthly Journal and The London Philatelist .

In 1919 the Leipzig stamp dealer Franz Junghanß took over the magazine. Due to the difficult economic circumstances, it appeared only irregularly in the 1920s, in 1923 only four times as a thin sheet. With issue 4/1923 it went under in the 34th year.

The better-known authors of the magazine included u. a. Hugo Krötzsch, Carl Lindenberg (partly with the pseudonym DR or D. Richter), Franz Kalckhoff , Ludwig Berger, Heinrich Fraenkel, Paul Orth and Herbert Munk .

Deutsche Zeitung für Briefmarkenkunde / Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung

German newspaper for postage stamps (1925–1985)

From 1925 the magazine Philatelistische Nachrichten appeared: Frankfurter Briefmarkenzeitung . The publisher was the stamp dealer and auctioneer SW Hess. From 1926 it appeared with the new subtitle "Deutsche Zeitung für Briefmarkenkunde," which was the official main title from 1930. In 1932 the publishing house Dr. Karl Höhn founded the magazine in Ulm, with Hess remaining editor-in-chief.

In 1934 Werner Kühn acquired the Deutsche Zeitung für Briefmarkenkunde , for which u. a. Gustav Kobold, Hans von Rudolphi , Kurt Zirkenbach, Eduard Peschl , Ludwig Heßhaimer and Franz Kalckhoff wrote regularly. After changing the publishing location to Breslau , issue 3/1943 was discontinued due to the war, the circulation was 24,000 copies.

The publishing family moved to Dassel , where the magazine was reissued from February 1949. The circulation rose to 60,000 in the 1960s. After Werner Kühn's death in 1963, the publishing house was passed on to his wife KM Kühn and daughter Eva Kilian, who continued the paper until 1979.

Over the years, some philatelic magazines went into the DBZ: z. B. "Das Posthorn", "Illustrierte Briefmarkenpost", "Die Tinzette", "Süddeutscher Briefmarken-Anzeiger", "Internationaler Briefmarken-Anzeiger", "Briefmarken-Kurier" or "Philatelistische Nachrichten".

From January 1980, the shareholders of Mittelrhein-Verlag acted as the publisher. Andreas König was the managing director of DBZ-Verlag and responsible for text and advertisements. In April 1980, Ludwig Tröndle became editor-in-chief.

Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung (from 1985)

In issue 24/1985, the name was changed from "Deutsche Zeitung für Briefmarkenkunde" to "Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung". The DBZ was, behind “Linn's Stamp News” (USA), the world's second largest philatelic magazine at the time. Traditionally, the classifieds section made up almost half of the magazine and was (until the 1990s) paginated separately and removable.

In July 1992 the DBZ was merged with the collectors' magazine “Collector Express” , which had been published in the GDR since March 1947 .

In 1997, Paul Parey Zeitschriftenverlag took over the publishing house, and in 1999 the paper was transferred to M. & H. Schaper Philatelie-Verlag, Alfeld (Leine) , which belongs to the Madsack publishing company . The competition paper Briefmarken-Spiegel is published by his publisher “Philapress” .

Torsten Berndt has been the editor-in-chief since 2009, and since 2014 he has also been the editor-in-chief of “Briefmarken-Spiegel”. In 2014, the number of printed copies was 23,000 per fortnightly issue.

The formerly powerful classifieds section has only made up 4 pages for several years.

DBZ online - the daily stamp newspaper

In 2012 the magazine started the daily offer “DBZ online - Die Briefmarken-Tageszeitung” on its website. In the meantime, however, this website is limited to breaking news and individual teasers. The company name "Die Briefmarken-Tageszeitung" was given up.
