Franz Kalckhoff

Franz Andreas Anton Kalckhoff (born November 30, 1860 in Charlottenburg ; † February 13, 1955 in Einbeck ) was a German philatelist and chemist. He is best known as a writer, editor of philatelic literature and expert on postal stationery . The " Kalckhoff Medal " was named after him.

Life

He has been interested in philately since childhood . When he was still attending school, he read the Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung and the 1874 catalog from Moschkau as early as the 1870s . From 1879 he studied chemistry in Berlin. After graduating, he first worked in Berlin, then from 1885 for the Höchst color works. From 1889 he worked in England as a color chemist in Huddersfield . He later worked for a short time in Prague and then again in Berlin from 1892. From September 1, 1893, he worked as a chemist in the Reich Patent Office. There, the next career steps from 1901 were civil servant councilor, 1912 secret councilor and 1921 senior councilor. In 1925 he retired. The bombing raids on Berlin induced him to move to Einbeck with his daughter and son-in-law in 1943.

Kalckhoff published his philatelic works and specialist articles partly with the pseudonym "Franz Andreas", "A. Franz "or" ff ". Together with his collector friend Carl Lindenberg, he uncovered the case of the forger Georges Fouré . In 1891 he took on the editing of the "Illustrierte Briefmarken-Zeitung" for the publishing house E. Heitmann in Leipzig . He was also editor of the “Postage Stamp” in 1926/27. He also edited the Schwaneberger album and was in the editorial staff of the Senf brothers' stamp catalog . He was a member of several domestic and foreign collectors' associations. After he moved to Berlin, he was secretary from 1893 and from 1903 to 1907 chairman of the Berlin Philatelic Club. He had a great fondness for postal stationery and was also a collector of telegraph stamps, telephone tickets and other less-noticed collecting areas.

Private life

From 1933 he was with the widow of Alexander Bungerz, Mrs. Elli Bungerz, geb. Quack married.
