Herbert Munk (born June 26, 1875 in Berlin , † April 19, 1953 in Lugano ) was a German philatelist and author .

Life

Munk was born the son of the Berlin architect Paul Munk. He studied philosophy and psychology in Berlin, Munich and Göttingen. In 1900 he did his doctorate at the University of Göttingen under Georg Elias Müller with a dissertation called "The phenomena with brief irritation of the visual organ" (date of the oral examination: May 11, 1900).

He was the author of a large part of the Kohl Postage Stamp Handbook . Furthermore, he was president of the technical committee of the Union of German Philatelic Associations and an international philatelic juror before the First World War .

Munk left Germany before the outbreak of war and continued his philatelic work in Switzerland . Around 120 years after the Rayon stamps were issued , it was still not possible to validly and correctly differentiate the different printing stones, i.e. the different editions of these stamps. They tried separating by color, but that proved imprecise. During the Second World War , Herbert Munk researched these issues, all of which had been produced by the lithographer Carl Durheim in Bern . Munk researched the differentiation between the different editions based on the printing stones. He named the first printing block A1.

honors and awards

For the Kohl-Handbuch he and JB Seymour were awarded the 1930 Sieger Prize for the best philatelic work in the German language. He received the Lindenberg Medal in 1925 and his name was added to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in Torquay in 1932 . In 1936 he received the Crawford Medal from the Royal Philatelic Society London . He was inducted into the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame and was made an honorary member of the Collectors Club of New York in 1949.
