Victor Suppantschitsch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Victor Suppantschitsch (born October 31, 1838 in Laibach , † March 2, 1919 in Graz ) was an Austrian lawyer and philatelist .

Life

Victor Suppantschitsch, son of a businessman, began his career in the judiciary in 1862 and made it to the position of President of the Senate before retiring in 1896. Already during his school days he collected plants and butterflies , in later years from 1863 postage stamps . This was linked to an intensive preoccupation with philatelic literature , which Suppantschitsch showed continued interest even after he gave up collecting stamps in 1882. He became known in philatelic circles primarily because of his then very extensive private philatelic library, with the help of which he wrote a bibliography that was highly valued by stamp collectors . His collection consisted of 1,800 books and 27,200 magazines in 3,037 years. In 1922 his heirs sold his philatelic library to Theodore E. Steinway , who donated it to the New York Collectors Club.
