Description and history

The wide popularity of the hobby of philately can also be found in the literature area. Philatelic catalogs , especially postage stamp catalogs , are among the most popular and fundamental works . In addition to postage stamp catalogs, there are also postal stationery and letter catalogs, mostly with price information. They are essential to get an overview of the collection areas and they are important reference points for prices. The Strasbourg bookseller Oscar Berger-Levrault started with his list or catalog on September 17, 1861, the first of its kind, which is also considered the first literature in the field of philately. It was called "Description of the Postage Stamps Known Up to Now" and was a stamp and postal stationery directory. A short time later, the first commercial stamp catalogs came into being. Today there are already online catalogs.

For further basic knowledge, philatelic specialist dictionaries are important, they contain definitions and compact information on the elementary terms, they are not only relevant for newcomers to the subject. The first detailed German-language lexicon came from 1923 and was called "Grosses Lexikon der Philatelie". This reference work with 14,500 entries still contained many proper names of places and motifs as keywords. As early as 1922, B. Poole published the Standard Philatelic Dictionary in book form. It was not until 1971 that the second specialist lexicon in German by the authors Gruschke / Grallert followed from the GDR with 5,300 headwords, which sold a total of 110,000 copies. 1978 was the only time a two-volume general work was published in Germany so far. Perhaps the first forerunner of a lexicon was a glossary of philatelic terms from 1912, entitled "Glossary of Philatelic Terms" by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain.

The first monographs in the field appeared around 1875, the first authors were e.g. B. Jean-Baptiste Moens or Alfred Moschkau . Probably the most successful guidebook or textbook in German-speaking countries to date was Richard Borek's 1963 book “Kleines Brevier für Briefmarkensammler”, which had a circulation of 150,000.

Several new books from the area appear in German-speaking countries every month. In addition to the large number of books on more or less specific topics, there are some philatelic journals . There are several general journals on this in Germany alone. There are also other sheets of working groups, which are often of great importance in their specialist area, and association news. A kind of first trade journal was "The Monthly Intelligencer" in September 1862, from Birmingham, by the publisher William Macmillan. This first magazine already had a lot of content about philately, but it also contained articles from other collecting areas and is therefore more of a forerunner. The world's first exclusively philatelic trade journal was "The Monthly Advertiser" from December 15, 1862 from England . Soon afterwards the first German magazine appeared with the “Magazin für Briefmarken-Collector” , with the first edition from May 1, 1863, published by the coin and antique shop Zschiesche & Köder in Leipzig . The three oldest stamp magazines published to date are:

These works find their way into philatelic libraries . Some of these specialist libraries include tens of thousands of media units. At first there were larger literature collections in the area only as private libraries , later the first association libraries were formed by collectors' associations and then special public libraries were formed .
