Jean-Baptiste Moens

Jean-Baptiste Moens (born May 27, 1833 in Tournai , † April 29, 1908 in Ixelles / Elsene ) was a Belgian professional philatelist and one of the pioneers in the stamp trade.

Life

He started out as a bookseller from the age of 19. He began trading postage stamps as early as the 1850s . Well-known philatelists were among his customers and he sold a great number of philatelic rarities. He also wrote several philatelic books, partly in collaboration with Louis Hanciau, and published his own stamp catalogs. Hanciau became his business partner. From February 15, 1863 to 1900, one of the world's first philatelic journals was published with the name “Le Timbre-Poste”, whose editor was Louis Hanciau. One of his specialties were reprints and reprints of postage stamps, some with original printing plates. He also dealt in postage remains, both of which were not yet banned at the time. Both its reputation and sales were legendary. In 1898 he compiled a biography of all 19 Mauritius Post Office stamps known at the time . The Roman numbering he introduced (I – XIX) was extended to include specimens discovered later and is still valid today. In 1900 he ended his business activity.

Private life

Around 1850 Moens met his wife Sophie, née Huys. They had seven children together and adopted five other children.
