Dunlossite memorial cross

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dunlossit memorial cross is a stone Celtic cross on the grounds of the Dunlossit House near the village of Port Askaig on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It stands south of the A846 near the east coast of the island. On September 27, 2000, the memorial cross was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

description

The exact time when the cross was built is not known. It shows two inscriptions: Isabella Buchan Gilmour (November 19, 1861– March 15, 1900) and Allan Gilmour of Eaglesham (May 4, 1820 – December 1905). It can be assumed that the cross was erected in memory of Isabella Gilmour's death and that her father's name was added after his death.

Today only the cross shaft with a stump of the surrounding wreath is preserved. The rectangular shaft shows typical intertwined Celtic ornaments. The plate below shows a woman with wings surrounded by two cherubins , holding a baby in her lap.
