Bernburg Memorial

The memorial for the victims of the Nazi "euthanasia" Bernburg is housed in the former Nazi killing center in Bernburg and commemorates the more than 14,000 people killed there.

history

In the former state-sanatorium was from the Nazi regime Association of Victims of an urn in the former 1952 gas chamber set up to commemorate the victims. In the years that followed, however, they were largely forgotten.

A small memorial was only set up in parts of the basement in 1982, but it was not open to the public and did not meet the requirements in the long term. The memorial site was redesigned from 1988 and finally opened to the public in September 1989.

In 1993 the state of Saxony-Anhalt took over the sponsorship of the facility. In November 2006, the Friends of the Memorial for the Victims of Nazi "Euthanasia" Bernburg e. V. founded. Since January 1, 2007, the memorial has been under the sponsorship of the Saxony-Anhalt Memorial Foundation .

In addition to guided tours through the premises of the former Nazi killing center, the educational offer includes other key topics, which are not limited to the time of National Socialism, but rather shed light on the exclusion of marginalized groups from 1900 onwards and the ideas on which they are based.
