Silent Heroes Memorial Center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Silent Heroes Memorial Center is a memorial in Berlin for the resistance against the persecution of the Jews from 1933 to 1945.

The permanent exhibition commemorates courageous people who stood by Jews who were persecuted during the Nazi tyranny . The example of the helpers, often referred to as “silent heroes”, shows that even under the conditions of the Nazi dictatorship and the Second World War, there was scope for action and decision-making options to protect the persecuted from a deadly threat.

The silent heroes memorial in the house of Otto Weidt's former workshop

The silent heroes memorial was opened on October 27, 2008 in the building of the former broom and brush binder workshop of Otto Weidt , a rescuer of Jews , at Rosenthaler Strasse 39 in Berlin-Mitte . It was supervised by the German Resistance Memorial Center Foundation .

The association Against Forgetting - For Democracy was the inspiration for the memorial . Inge Deutschkron was significantly involved . When researching, one could fall back on the research project “Rescue of Jews in National Socialist Germany 1933–1945” of the Center for Antisemitism Research at the Technical University of Berlin , led by Wolfgang Benz .

On the first floor, exemplary fates could be called up at eight media tables. On the second floor, the individual fates of both successful and unsuccessful rescue attempts were described. In addition, one could find out more about the lives and fates of rescuers and those rescued on eight screens.

In preparation for the move to the new location, the memorial at Rosenthaler Strasse 39 closed in October 2017.
