The 20th anniversary of the unification of the KPD and SPD is the name of a previously listed memorial plaque in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

It was located at the theater of friendship cinema at Braunschweiger Straße 25 in Magdeburg's Sudenburg district , immediately to the left of the main entrance to the cinema. The board is currently stored in the magazine of the Magdeburg Technology Museum .

Design and history

The plaque was created in 1966 by the Magdeburg sculptor Walter Bischof . The occasion was the 20th anniversary of the compulsory unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED in 1946 , which was celebrated in the GDR as an essential part of the state's understanding of history, but the character of a compulsory unification was not discussed. The reason for the plaque was that the KPD and SPD for the Magdeburg district were supposed to have been merged in this cinema on March 30 and 31, 1946 .

The bronze plaque shows in its upper part the emblem of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), two hands reaching in front of a flag. Below is the text:

The memorial plaque was entered under number B 1.1.7 in the district monument list of the Magdeburg district.

The board is no longer in its original location, but is stored in the magazine of the Technikmuseum Magdeburg (as of 2017). At least since 2009 the plaque has not been listed in the local monument register .
