The memorial tower to the Battle of Großbeeren in 1813 is a 32 meter high, listed building in Großbeeren , an unofficial municipality in the northern part of the Teltow-Fläming district ( Brandenburg ). It was built on the 100th anniversary of the victorious Battle of Großbeeren and inaugurated on August 23, 1913. He is considered the landmark of the place.

location

The tower stands at the intersection of Landstrasse 40, which leads to the tower from the west as Bahnhofstrasse and to the east as the street Am Sportplatz and continuing as Diedersdorfer Strasse . From the north, Berliner Straße (K 7241) leads to the tower, which is called Genshagener Straße to the south .

construction

The building has a rectangular base with an exhibition hall in the base. Among other things, there is a diorama with a battle scene. The base is clad with a replicated, roughly hewn basement . Above it, the tower tapers in a trapezoidal shape. Three pillars on each side support a first platform above. It can be reached via arched doors and will serve as an emergency exit in 2014. Two rectangular lattice windows are embedded in each of the two interior columns. The octagonal tower extends over the platform, the facade of which was designed twice with a cornice . Above the viewing platform there is a domed roof clad with sheet copper . On the north facade the builders put the inscription above a battle scene with a horse: “Here on August 23, 1813, the French army was defeated by the Prussian troops under General von Bülow . The victory saved Berlin from the threat of French occupation. ”Above it, the dates“ 1813 ”and“ 1913 ”are attached. The Iron Cross can be seen between the numbers . There are the initials "FW", a laurel wreath and the year 1813 below a crown . They stand for Friedrich Wilhelm III. (Prussia) .

history

The tower was one of the first structures to be constructed from reinforced concrete at the beginning of the 20th century in just six months . The then district deputy of the Teltow district and government architect Karl Lange took over the management . He commissioned the Berlin firm Eisenbetonbau Schwartz GmbH with the work. The inauguration took place in the presence of Prince Eitel Friedrich von Prussia and the District Administrator von Aschenbach . The tower was extensively renovated between 1998 and 2001. For around 1,850,000 DM (including around one million DM in funding from the district), the tower received an internal steel frame for reinforcement; Any cracks that appeared on the facade were treated and a spiral staircase with 137 steps was installed starting from the museum hall and leading to the viewing platform. The tower and the redesigned museum opened on August 24, 2001.
