content

In order to take revenge on an old lover, the Comte de Gercourt, and to make him the mockery of Parisian society, the Marquise de Merteuil plans to deflower his teenage fiancée Cécile, who has just been discharged from a convent school, before the wedding . To do this, she needs the help of her former lover Vicomte de Valmont, a womanizer who, like herself, does not feel bound by moral and traditional sexual norms. Since Valmont actually desires the Marquise, it is also too easy for him to seduce a 16-year-old girl and he also has his eye on the virtuous, moral Madame de Tourvel, the Marquise and Valmont make a bet that if he does manages to seduce Madame de Tourvel, who will sleep with him again. Even if Valmont succeeds in a scheming and brutal way to fulfill the conditions of the bet, the marquise refuses him the agreed price. The betting is no longer so important to Valmont, because he has fallen in love with Madame de Tourvel. After the Madame kills herself, Valmont dies in a duel with Cecile's fiancée and the Marquise believes the intrigue is now hidden, the letters between her and Vicomte become public and everyone learns of the true, immoral side of the Marquise.

reception

Klaus Kalchschmid from the Deutsche Bühne says about the play: "Wolfgang Adenberg, from whom the book and lyrics come, distilled a musical dramaturgically superbly built musical from this bitterly evil model, which already comes to a head towards the end of the first act and takes off more and more towards the end. Marc Schubring composed music for it, excellently orchestrated by Frank Hollmann, which is steadily becoming more dramatic and dissonant. " Antonia Goldhammer from Bayrischer Rundfunk calls the piece "a tragic musical that is rare, but also deserves a bolder, more radical, briefly more consistent staging." In addition, Goldhammer complains: "The empathy necessary for this tragedy, the shock of the inhuman intrigues does not appear at first." For Wolf-Dieter Peter from the Neue Musikzeitung, the musical is hooked on the music, and he notices "nothing gets stuck in the film-sound-wave, which amplified the sound technology, which was probably damaged by rock concerts, at least in the first part and covered all voices . "
