The battle at Blackburn's Ford took place on July 18, 1861. It was a battle of the American Civil War during the Manassas campaign .

On July 16, 1861, Brigadier General Irvin McDowell joined the Army of Northeastern Virginia from Washington, DC to attack the Confederate Potomac Army near Manassas , Virginia. The majority of his 35,000 soldiers were well equipped but poorly trained and consisted predominantly of 90-day volunteers whose service with some regiments had already expired.

McDowell intended to attack PGT Beauregard's Army head-on across the Bull Run. In order to find out how the crossing over the river could be carried out, he started a combat reconnaissance with the 4th Brigade under Colonel Israel B. Richardson on July 18 . This brigade arrived around 11:30 am on the pickets of the brigade deployed there Brigadier General James Longstreet . Using his reserves and those of his neighbor, Colonel Jubal A. Earlys , Longstreet managed to repel the repeated attacks by Union troops. The Union troops evaded to Centerville, Virginia.

Because of the very strong defense, McDowell changed his plan of operations. He decided to attack the southerners on their left wing, which led to the first battle at Bull Run three days later .
