The spotted snail ( Arianta arbustorum ), also called tree snail or tree snail , is a shell- bearing land snail . Their distribution area extends from northwest Europe to central Europe.
features
The housing of Arianta arbustorum is spherical with a conical raised thread. However, the height of the thread and the size of the navel are very variable. The umbilicus is usually (but not always) completely covered by the spindle envelope of the white mouth lip. There are essentially two different shapes: a shape with a spherical housing and a closed navel, and a shape with a flattened thread and an open navel. The latter form is limited to a few high-lying areas in the Alps. Their coloring is usually maroon with yellow spots and a dark band. Arianta arbustorum is one of the most variable species of snail in terms of shape . In many cases, different geographic valley and mountain forms are described, which is due to their pronounced polymorphism . Similar to the banded snails, Arianta arbustorum 's selection by throttles ( throttle forge ) led to a distribution of different looking shells.
Occurrence
Due to its low ecological demands, it can be found in many locations, including a. in mountains (up to 2700 m), in forests and open biotopes. However, it prefers moist habitats . The high mountain shape with a flattened case and open navel is interpreted as a relic shape that survived on Nunatakkern during the last Ice Age .
