The spotted sea bass or spotted sea bass ( Dicentrarchus punctatus ) is a fish from the family of sea bass (Moronidae). The generic name means "two-pronged perch".
features
Spotted sea bass grow to a maximum of around 70 centimeters and an average of around 30 centimeters. The flanks have clearly visible dots of color (see also the scientific species name!), And there is also a larger black spot on the edge of the gill cover. Compared to the European sea bass , the eyes are larger in relation to the head. The animals have an upper mouth .
Occurrence
The species occurs in the eastern Atlantic from the Senegalese coast and the Canary Islands to around the Bay of Biscay and rarely in the English Channel - a distribution area that is shifted southwards compared to the European sea bass. They also live in the Mediterranean Sea and are considered immigrants in the Red Sea , where they are recorded in the Gulf of Suez . Sea bass, which are coastal inhabitants anyway, also invade the brackish water areas. They do not show a clear preference for any particular type of seabed.
Way of life
The predatory spotted sea bass mainly prey on shrimp, crabs and mollusks. Fish are also found in the diet.
Fishery use
The species is not a main target fish for commercial fishing , but sport fishermen are after it.
