features

The fore wing length is 15 to 16 millimeters. The top is pale brown and unmarked. The underside of the forewing is lighter with two or three white discal spots. The hind wing underside is light sand-brown, but whitish towards the inner margin. The female has an angled row of white discal spots on the upper side of the forewings, consisting of very small ones on the front edge and larger ones in cells 1b, two and three, which are also present on the underside. There are also indistinctly bright discal spots on the underside of the hind wings.

Geographical occurrence and habitat

Gegenes nostrodamus is distributed from the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea through the Middle East to Turkestan and India . It mostly occurs in the coastal areas from 0 to 100 meters. In some Mediterranean mountains, however, it rises up to 1200 meters, in North Africa up to 1800 meters. Although the species is widespread, it is always very local. The moth lives in hot, dry ravines and in the floodplains of rivers, which are dry in summer, with little vegetation.

Way of life

The moths fly in two or three generations in the Mediterranean region from late April to October. The host plant (s) is not known for Europe. On the Sinai peninsula, eggs and caterpillars were found on various types of grass , Aeluropus ssp. and millet ( Panicum spp.) found.
